Looking Ahead to 2017

There are many things that can be said about the year 2016. It brought us several great new coasters, as well as ton of great content here at Coaster101. (The Coaster101 team had a pretty great year too!) But, with the calendar turned to 2017, it’s time to look ahead to see what’s coming in the new year.

If 2016 was the year of RMC (Lightning Rod at Dollywood, Storm Chaser at Kentucky Kingdom, and Joker at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom), then 2017 very well may be the year of the Wooden Coaster, with two new Great Coasters International projects in InvadR at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and Mystic Timbers at Kings Island. If you add in Fun Spot America’s yet-to-be named Gravity Group woodie, it’s a solid year to be a wooden coaster fan.

If steel coasters are more your thing, look no further than Intamin’s Wave Breaker: The Rescue Coaster, opening at Sea World San Antonio this year. The coaster will be the first of it’s design in the United States, and will feature “jet-ski” style seats. And after the success of Batman: The Ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and Joker at Six Flags Great Adventure, Six Flags will be adding three more S&S 4-D Freespin Coasters to their parks this year, with Jokers debuting at Six Flags over Texas, Six Flags New England, and Six Flags Great America.

There are also several smaller parks around the United States receiving some impressive new coasters. In New Jersey, Playland’s Castaway Cove is adding the S&S “Galeforce,” while Casino Pier is receiving a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter. Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, PA, will also be receiving an S&S Worldwide Coaster; Merlin’s Mayhem, which will be the company’s first inverted family coaster.

In short, there’s a ton going on in at parks in 2017. For a full list of 2017 announcements, click here to scroll through all of our “New For 2017” Posts.
