20 Coasters Celebrating 20 Years in 2020: 20.20.2020

Believe it or not, the year 2000 was potentially one of the greatest years of roller coaster openings ever. Sure, there’s the obvious Millennium Force, named for the new millennium, but there were several other standouts that opened as well. To commemorate 20 years of these coasters, (and following up on 2019’s “19 for 99” series) we’re starting a 20-part series, highlighting some of our favorite coasters that opened in 2000. Every other Monday we’ll post a new short feature – in alphabetical order. At the end of the series, we’ll let the Coaster101 audience vote to try to come up with a definitive* ranking of the best coasters of the year 2000.

There were 147 coasters that opened worldwide in 2000, and several still receive world renown, 20 years later. According to the most recent Golden Ticket Awards, three of the top 20 steel coasters in the world opened in 2000, including two of the top four. On the wooden side, 3 of the top 26 wooden coasters also opened this year.

The list we’ve got coming has a good mix of coasters on it, and will hopefully provide you a bit of a history lesson. Some on this list are still operating and very popular, like the aforementioned Millennium Force or Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce. A few of them have since closed and been relocated and renamed. A few are currently standing but not operating, and haven’t for some time. A few have even sadly been demolished entirely.

So stay tuned for the series starting next Monday, March 2, and check back every other week for a new article highlighting coasters from the year 2000. Let us know in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter what your favorite coasters from 2000 are (or were!)
