A-Z Coaster of the Week: Incredible Hulk

We return to Florida for this week’s “A-Z Coaster of the Week.” The Incredible Hulk opened along with Universal Studios Islands of Adventures on May 28, 1999 within the Marvel Super Hero Island area of the park. The towering green was the first and still only Bolliger & Mabillard coaster to include a launched mechanism. The coaster uses B&M’s traditional sit-down trains.

After walking through a themed queue, riders board a train and depart through the “gamma tube” which begins seemingly as a traditional slow lift hill. However, a “malfunction” occurs which propels the train from 0-40 mph in two seconds. The train explodes out of the tunnel and into the first inversion: a zero-g roll.

The train then maneuvers a 11-story cobra roll that towers over the Islands of Adventure lagoon and Marvel Super Hero Island. A vertical loop, 360° turn and corkscrew complete the first half of the coaster.

The second half of the coaster is more twisted and includes a second, smaller vertical loop and another corkscrew. The coaster is 3,700 feet long with ride time lasting around two minutes and 15 seconds. The coaster stands 110 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 67 mph as it navigates through all seven inversions.

Fun Fact: As Bolliger & Mabillard do not build launched coasters, the flywheel launch system that propels Incredible Hulk trains was developed separately.
