A-Z Coaster of The Week: Zydeco Scream

For our final installment of this round of A-Z Coaster of the Week, we head south to the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans and focus on Zydeco Scream, which has been standing but not operating (SBNO) since Hurricane Katrina forced the closure of the park in August 2005.

Originally dubbed “Boomerang” in Barcelona’s Parc de Montjuic from 1990 to 1998, this Arrow Dynamics-designed Vekoma Boomerang Coaster came to the former Jazzland Park in 2000. When the park was purchased by Six Flags in 2002, and renamed Six Flags New Orleans, Zydeco Scream got to keep its name.

Zydeco Scream is identical to other Vekoma Boomerang Coasters, which have been manufactured since the mid-1980’s. Riders are pulled backwards up a chain lift hill out of the station, are released, and proceed through a cobra roll and loop before ascending up a chain lift hill, only to then complete the cycle in reverse. Zydeco Scream stands 116 feet tall, and topped out at 47 mph.

The park’s land is no longer owned by Six Flags, and instead is now owned by the city of New Orleans. Several films have utilized the location, including Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. There are rumors that it will also be a setting for the upcoming film, Jurassic World, a fourth installment of Stephen Speilberg’s “Jurassic Park” series.
