The Dark Knight Rises – The Ride… The Dark Knight Rises Coaster… The Dark Knight Rides. These names don’t necessarily roll off the tongue easily, but I don’t think that would stop Six Flags from building an attraction themed around the latest Batman film.
As The Dark Knight Rises (TDKR) has proven to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, along with with the Six Flags/DC Comics partnership, I believe we may someday see a “TDKR”-themed ride at a Six Flags park. But what would it be? Let’s look into a few possibilities. Keep in mind that this is all wishful thinking on my part mixed with a bit of daydreaming.
Six Flags built three “Dark Knight” coasters during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Who’s to say that Six Flags won’t repeat that for TDKR over the next few years?
I centered my attraction ideas around “The Bat” aircraft which is seen throughout TDKR. From flying through Gotham City to blowing up stuff, it fits the mold of a kick-butt Batman-mobile (or aircraft).
Perhaps the most plausible “Bat” idea would be a Bolliger and Mabillard wing coaster. A clone of Six Flags Great America’s X-Flight would make an excellent addition to any of the other Six Flags properties. Imagine entering an updated bat cave complete with waterfalls, swarming bats and Batman paraphernalia scattered about (think of a Batman: The Ride station, but more like the Batcave seen in the latest Batman films). An onride sound system would provide riders with a Hans Zimmer-infused soundtrack as they fly through the course of the coaster. Fire and mist effects would add to the overall ride experience. The trains could be crafted to look very similar to the “Bat” seen in TDKR, with riders attached the “wings” of the aircraft.
With a little creative Batman scenery and some strategic fly-through elements scattered throughout the layout of the coaster, it could be a huge hit with the general public.
Of course, Six Flags could go in a completely different direction with a TDKR-themed attraction. A 4D movie or dark ride could transport guests into Gotham City as they fly overhead skyscrapers and battle Batman’s most infamous arch enemies. I believe this would be more appropriate for a Universal park, but Six Flags has thrown us curve balls before. I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question.
And who knows, perhaps Six Flags could go with a literal translation of “The Dark Knight Rises” and add a drop tower themed to Batman’s latest theatrical outing. Although unlikely, it wouldn’t be the worst drop tower name of all time [I’m looking at you, Drop Tower(s)].
Now, again, these are only my ideas. I’m interested to hear what you think a TDKR-inspired attraction would consist of. Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below:
My vote would be to retire all of the silly “Bat man” stuff (even before what happened in Aurora, CO), although I don’t expect Six Flags to ever do that.
I personally think 95% of the movie tie-ins to coasters are completely and utterly pointless. Green Lantern, Superman Ultimate Flight (SFDK), Superman (SFMM), Terminator, etc. etc. don’t really add anything to the ride beside the color scheme.
The Dark Knight being such a rich franchise with incredible sets and awesome characters in my opinion deserves something much more immersive. I would love to see a major studio themed park (Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal) tackle the franchise and build a giant passenger friendly fleet of Tumblers. Imagine a Test Track style ride but in a Tumblr through the streets of Gotham/Arkham Asylum and drifting around.
A coaster would, from my perspective end up as another coaster. But just the thought of seeing a tumbler pull up in front of air gates has me squealing like a little girl.
Most of these dystopias are just ripping off the sets from Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece BRAZIL.
I’m glad I have no idea what an Arkham Asylum or a Tumbler is.
For the Bat I think a wing coaster works fine but for the Tumbler I think an Indiana Jones or Spiderman/Transformers style vehicle would be the best fit – too bad it will never happen at a Six Flags park.
I’m not sure why one would use an EMV style ride because the Tumbler isn’t about rocking side to side or feeling dramatic motion, its about raw power and speed. That’s why I think a Test Track/Radiator Springs Racers on steroids through a full blown urban setting and the bat caves would be best.
I dunno, I think the Tumbler is more about busting through walls and jumping over things. I think this sequence would translate well to a Spiderman style ride: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZicrp_p4BE
