Disney Unveils Real, Working Lightsaber and New Updates to the Star Wars Hotel

“This will be a day long remembered.”

Since today is Star Wars Day (May the 4th Be With You!), Disney has announced some new updates to their upcoming Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel experience. This article will be talking about the new updates, but for a comprehensive review of everything we know so far, check out this article.

Okay, let’s get the biggest one out of the way first: Disney has created a real, working lightsaber. As far as we can tell, it can’t slice through anything (that would be a liability), but what it does feature is a retractable blade of light that can emerge from a hilt. Take a look at the video below.

There have been rumors that this has been in the works for years, with Disney filing patents for retractable LEDs and complicated hilt designs for “laser swords” over the past few years, but when Disney Chairman Josh D’Amaro showed off a brief glimpse at last month’s exclusive Disney event, we knew it was real. No one who attended the event was allowed to release the footage, but now, Disney has put out their own look at the incredible design.

As the Disney Parks article says, “Not sure if what you just saw is actually what you just saw? Maybe you should watch it one more time. Or 10.” It’s not clear whether this lightsaber will be exclusive to the Galactic Starcruiser or not, because Disney says Starcruiser guests will be the “first to see it in action,” but Disney doesn’t specify whether the lightsaber will find its way into Galaxy’s Edge.

Besides this galactic bombshell, there were other details released by Disney about the hotel experience, including that that it is on track to open in 2022, it will be a two night adventure, and that the experience will be unique to each guest, with Disney promising that even the conversations guests have with cast members will affect their story about the ship.

Disney also shared some updates to ship amenities, such as the main dining room being called the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, named after Han Solo’s home planet. Per Disney, “the dining room is a bright and welcoming hall that will offer breakfast and lunch to passengers before transitioning each evening into a lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins.” It will also feature live entertainment from characters like the Starcruiser’s strong and charismatic captain, a plucky ship’s mechanic and a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger.

There is a lot to be excited for in 2022, and the Galactic Starcruiser looks to be one of the highlights. What do you think of this amazing announcement? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to check out our previous article to learn more about the Starcruiser!
