Michigan’s Adventure & Worlds of Fun Announce Ride Closures. Future Expansion on the Way?

While theme parks wind down their daily operating schedules each August, one of the most exciting things about the month is that it is typically when new attractions are starting to be teased and announced for the future. Earlier today, two Cedar Fair parks, Michigan’s Adventure and Worlds of Fun announced the closure of long-time attractions at their respective parks, leaving fans wondering what could be coming next!

Starting in Muskegon, Michigan’s Adventure announced the closure of their Be-Bop Blvd. Electric Cars Attraction.

On Facebook today, the park had the following message: “Attention Be-Bop Blvd. cruisers! The last day of operation for Be-Bop Blvd will be Sunday, August 11. Take your last ride on the boulevard this weekend before it is gone forever.”

Be-Bop Blvd. opened at Michigan’s Adventure in 2002, and is a classic electric car ride in which the cars are guided by a rail. This ride is themed to the 1950s.

The attraction sits on a rather large plot of land in between the Corkscrew Roller Coaster and Zach’s Zoomer. Any guesses what this space could become in the future?

Not to be outdone by their sister park to the north, Worlds of Fun also announced a closure on Facebook today, with the notice that Oceans of Fun’s “Diamond Head” water slide complex would be gone forever following the 2019 park season.

“We will be saying good-bye to Diamond Head following the 2019 season, but welcoming a new tide in 2020, #Rip” the park wrote on Facebook. Diamond Head is an original Oceans of Fun attraction, opening when the water park first opened in 1982.

Given its location in the southeastern corner of Oceans of Fun, the Diamond Head slide complex frees up a good bit of room for expansion. I have no idea what might be coming to the water park, but here’s an educated guess, based on the “tease” the park gave on Facebook.

To me, new “tide” means waves. Could Diamond Head be closing to make way for a new wave pool at Oceans of Fun? There’s definitely precedent with multiple wave pools in water parks throughout the Cedar Fair family. Potentially with the word “Riptide” in its name? (There’s no way #Rip was used instead of #RIP without a reason, right?!)

As the closures begin, the speculation for what’s coming will only continue to ramp up. Stay tuned to Coaster101.com for more information about just what might be replacing Be Bop Blvd. and Diamond Head in the future!
