According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joby Harold, the writer and executive producer of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on the Disney+ streaming platform, will pen the script for what is described as a “family adventure” film.

This of course won’t be the first Disney movie inspired by one of its theme park attractions. Past films based on Disney rides include Tower of Terror, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, among others. A movie based on the beloved Jungle Cruise attraction is scheduled to be released in July 2021.

Space Mountain has become a Disney classic around the globe. The first Space Mountain was built in 1975 at Magic Kingdom followed by the second in 1977 at Disneyland (it was rebuilt in 2005). Tokyo Disneyland opened its version in 1983. Disneyland Paris’ (1995) is currently operating as Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain: Rebel Mission. Hong Kong Disneyland’s (2005) is also operating as Hyperspace Mountain.

What’s interesting about bringing Space Mountain to the big screen is that, unlike many Disney attractions, Space Mountain coasters (at least the two in the US) have no set backstory like Jungle Cruise or Tower of Terror. This has allowed parks to overlay various themes on the coasters (like Star Wars) without having to worry about altering a storyline.

Additionally, with Disney going all-in on the Star Wars franchise, it seems peculiar that they would venture off into a new (potential) franchise.

The production is in the early stages, so no release date or casting information has been made public.
