NightFlight Expedition Reviews and Reactions from Dollywood

NightFlight Expedition reviews and reactions are pouring out of Dollywood. After months of construction updates, speculation and trying to figure out exactly how it will work, NightFlight Expedition is finally ready to take flight when it opens to the public on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Coaster101 writers attended a recent media preview of the new attraction and are back with a lot of thoughts.

The Mack Rides Rocking Boat model combines four different experiences — flight, river rapids, a traditional roller coaster and a lake voyage — inside a massive 44,000-square-foot building at the back of Wildwood Grove. It will be the first Rocking Boat attraction to be completely enclosed, and much of the ride’s layout and experience has remained a mystery throughout construction.

Coaster101 writers Andrew, John and Kyle were able to experience the attraction and are excited to share their thoughts, hot takes and other initial NightFlight Expedition reviews and reactions.

Note: Dollywood has a strict no-recording-device policy — we were required to store our phones in special locking pouches prior to boarding the ride vehicle. You kept the pouch with you on the ride, and a host unlocked it for you upon exit.

Photos and videos won’t do it any justice, so don’t bother trying to film it! Take a trip to Dollywood and experience it for yourself.

WARNING: NIGHT FLIGHT EXPEDITION SPOILERS AHEAD!

NightFlight Expedition Reviews

What was your very first reaction after your first ride on NightFlight Expedition?

Andrew: I think Dollywood has another great family attraction on their hands. The queue was incredibly themed. The ride system – a first of its kind in the US! – was a unique experience, and the ride itself, with a mix of screens, practical sets, the transition from coaster track to water and back all made for a fun experience.

John: I was blown away by what Dollywood has accomplished — it checked all the boxes I hoped it would. It’s immersive. It’s fun. It’s well-paced. And it’s a gorgeous ride.

Kyle: I was in awe of the artistic side of the ride. As a designer, I appreciated the cohesive storytelling through the scenes. The bioluminescence takes center stage throughout the ride with bold color accompanied by a great soundtrack.

What surprised you most about NightFlight Expedition, especially since so much of it was kept under wraps?

Andrew: I tried to be as spoiler-free going into this attraction – and from the outside, the Hidden Hollow Aviation hangar does not look like an enormous space, but they managed to cram a lot into a relatively compact footprint, between the massive indoor queue (with great air conditioning) and the overall ride experience – big things clearly come in small packages.

John: I didn’t realize the rapids would be so…intense? I knew how the ride system works and that water was obviously a core component. But I was so impressed that Mack was able to incorporate that rush of water into a relatively confined space.

Kyle: I think the ride system itself surprised me the most. The transitions between scenes and types of ride experiences were seamless. Going from coaster track right into raging rapids is incredible.

Is NightFlight Expedition a roller coaster? Will you count it as a coaster credit?

Andrew: I’m mostly of the opinion that you count what you want for credits (within reason). That said, I’ve been on other attractions that are widely considered coaster credits by the coaster hivemind that had fewer coaster elements than NightFlight Expedition. So yes, absolutely a coaster credit. #335 for me (and yes, it’s now on RCDB, so we’re vindicated.)

John: It is absolutely a roller coaster, although the traditional roller coaster segment makes up (maybe) a quarter of the ride experience. There are two drops — one backward and the other forward. They’re on par with the drops on Blazing Fury, except much smoother and more graceful.

Do you get wet on NightFlight Expedition?

Andrew: The first drop into the water got my feet wet in the front row, but it’s not like it’s a soaking wet experience – more so unexpected. I think the further back you sit, the drier you will be.

John: I sat in the front row and did get a few splashes of water on me. With it so hot outside, I dried off very quickly. However, I would not have wanted to leave a ride damp during a cold day, so I’m curious if they’ll be able to turn down the splash levels during the colder months.

Kyle: I was right behind John and Andrew in the second row and did not get any water on my feet and barely a misting on my shirt.

What was your favorite part of the ride? Why?

Andrew: I’m someone who loves theming, so I’ve got to give a shoutout to the queue experience, because it’s one of those lines that you will 100% discover something new each time you ride. As for the ride itself, I loved the blending of everything – screens, practical sets, coaster elements, water elements, dark ride elements – Nightflight Expedition is truly an attraction that has a little bit of everything – and with a 39″ height requirement and a gentle ride experience, is probably the best example of a multi-generational attraction that I’ve ever experienced. There were a few moments where I was asking myself “wait, how did they do that?”

John: I loved the finale as you finally reach Secret Lake. The lighting effects, the music, the water, everything works together so well. It’s a fitting end to the expedition.

Kyle: As I said before, the transition from track to rapids is surreal. It’s like you are experiencing something that feels like it can’t be possible. We are so hardwired for attractions to operate one way or another, and this is unlike anything I’ve ridden.

How is NightFlight Expedition’s queue?

Andrew: Detailed, and the further you get into the queue, the more detailed it seems to get. Before you ascend the stairs into the station, there’s a fun pre-show scene that explains the bioluminescence associated with NightFlight Expedition. (At least I think that’s what it was doing – the lights changed from normal to bioluminescent colors and there was a voiceover that I couldn’t hear during our experience.)

John: NightFlight Expedition’s queue is expansive and very well-themed, especially the closer you get to the loading station, as Andrew mentioned. The audio was difficult to hear, so I think I missed some of the ride’s backstory. But honestly, I think my favorite part was the climate control!

Kyle: I will second what Andrew said here – the attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed. Dollywood is stepping up their game not only in attractions but in how they are making them a production to experience (the cold A/C was also much appreciated inside the building).

What did you think of the NightFlight expedition ride vehicles, known as “Smoky Mountain Tracker Vehicles?”

Andrew: Functionally, they’re comfortable, felt spacious, and the fact that they’re designed to feature continuous loading and unloading hopefully means that they’ll be a people eater from a capacity standpoint. Visually, like the rest of this attraction, they’re beautiful and very well themed.

John: They’re comfortable and spacious. I liked that there was some space between riders. Having a front row seat really made me feel like I was on a solo journey. I completely forgot there were others riding with me.

Kyle: I loved how roomy they were. You sit two across but never are close to bumping elbows with your neighbor. I also enjoy the fact that you take all of your belongings with you and there isn’t a wait for guests to put items in the storage bins.

How does the ride balance thrills and storytelling?

Andrew: If there was one of those old “law scales” where one side was thrills, and the other was storytelling, it would be tilted significantly to the storytelling side, because the thrills are more on the mild side. But the storytelling makes NightFlight Expedition what it is, and I don’t think it would have been as good without the elements of storytelling.

John: This is a story-driven attraction. The goal is very clear — find Secret Lake. It’s easy to follow thanks to narration from the attraction’s two main characters, Jasper and Cora.

What did you think of the transition between the different show scenes or sections of the ride?

Andrew: To go from screen, to coaster track, to water, to coaster track was honestly as seamless as it could be.

John: I agree with Andrew. Considering the scale of the transitions—from water ride to coaster can be clunky—each show scene change felt effortless.

Kyle: This is what makes this attraction different from anything else. If the transitions were janky, it wouldn’t work, and the pacing would be off. However, it all goes off without a hitch, and the ride flow is amazing.

How does NightFlight Expedition compare with your expectations going in?

Andrew: I didn’t really know what to expect because I was trying to be as spoiler-free as possible – to the point of not watching POV’s of the first MACK rocking boat ride that opened in France. I think the promise of family thrills, a story-driven attraction, and an immersive environment were all delivered upon, in an attraction worthy of being Dollywood’s largest financial investment.

John: As stated, this is exactly what I was hoping NightFlight Expedition would be. It’s technologically advanced, it’s unlike anything I’ve ridden before and it’s immersive. I’m not sure how it could have exceeded my expectations, because they were so high.

How does NightFlight fit into Dollywood’s existing attraction lineup? Where does it rank among the park’s other attractions (not just its coasters)?

Andrew: With the addition of NightFlight, more than half of Dollywood’s roller coasters (again, 100% considering this a credit) have a height requirement of 42″ or less – joining Blazing Fury (42″), Big Bear Mountain, Dragonflier, Firechaser Express (all 39″) and Whistle Punk Chaser (36″). In a park that truly keeps the family dynamic in mind, it’s another fantastic add to the overall ride lineup.  As to where it ranks among the rest of the park’s attractions, it comes down to personal preference, but I would probably note it as my second-favorite attraction in Wildwood Grove, behind Big Bear Mountain, and rank it above Whistle Punk Chaser, Blazing Fury, and Dragonflier in the park’s overall coaster rankings. That’s not a negative as much as it speaks to the overall quality of Dollywood’s coaster and attraction lineup. The addition of an indoor family thrill attraction is definitely a plus as well.

John: Dollywood desperately needed another indoor attraction to join Blazing Fury. Dollywood can get very hot (like it was during our visit) or very cold. Having another option to escape the extremes is a welcome addition.

Kyle: It’s hard to rank this ride among the other coasters at the park. While I fully believe it deserves the title of coaster, it feels more like a dark water ride (which the park needed as well). As far as immersive attractions go at Dollywood, NightFlight takes the top spot.

What do you think families will think of NightFlight Expedition?

Andrew: I think NightFlight Expedition is an attraction designed with families in mind. Young kids and grandparents and everyone in between can ride it. It will be well received by literally everyone who rides it.

John: NightFlight Expedition is a crowd-pleasing attraction.

Kyle: This is going to be an instant favorite for the general public. As enthusiasts, we see new technologies coming and are half expecting what’s to come, but casual park goers are not going to know what hit them. Guests will be speechless coming down the exit ramp.

Is there anything about NightFlight Expedition that you think could be improved or changed?

Andrew: Personal preference here. I wish the attraction was another minute or two longer, with maybe one or two more coaster elements/water elements, but realize that there was a ton packed into a small space, and you’re at the mercy of the overall footprint that has to house literally everything.

John: I found the exterior of the building and the path leading up to it to be the most disappointing. I understand that the building is themed after a hangar, but I do think more could have been done to blend it into the overall Wildwood Grove aesthetic. The newly planted trees will help fill in the area, but that will take years (and I think we’ll need more).

Kyle: As a fan of coasters, I do wish the coaster part was a bit longer. But selfishly, I really want the rapids scene to be three times longer because it was so fun!

Sum up NightFlight Expedition in one sentence.

Andrew: NightFlight Expedition does a lot of things right while setting the bar of what a family coaster/dark ride/water ride hybrid can be inside of a regional park.

John: NightFlight Expedition is yet another reminder that Dollywood is elevating itself to another league in the theme park industry.

Kyle: NightFlight Expedition will leave you wondering what just happened and also have you immediately getting back in line.
