Dollywood Coaster Explorers Tour – Is It Worth It?

Dollywood’s new-for-2026 Coaster Explorers tour is a 3-hour guided tour through the park with front-of-the-line access to some of Dollywood’s most popular roller coasters.

What does the Dollywood Coaster Explorers tour include?

The Coaster Explorers tour “blends immersive storytelling with behind-the-scenes technical insights, offering a deeper look at what makes each attraction unforgettable.”

From record-breaking thrills to innovative ride design, Coaster Explorers brings Dollywood’s iconic coasters to life like never before. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re a seasoned thrill-seeker, our knowledgeable guides will lead you on a stress-free journey to discover the very best of Dollywood’s legendary coasters.

The tour gives you front-of-the-line (through the exit) access to the following roller coasters:

  • Lightning Rod
  • Thunderhead
  • Mystery Mine
  • Big Bear Mountain
  • Wild Eagle
  • FireChaser Express

Unfortunately, this was not the tour I hoped for, which was something along the lines of Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s Coaster 101 tour. While it is undoubtedly a stress-free journey to discover Dollywood’s best coasters, it unfortunately does not include behind-the-scenes technical insights for any of those coasters, at least not on my tour. However, that does not mean it is not worth the spend.

What to Expect on Dollywood’s Coaster Explorers Tour

The tour begins at the TimeSaver & Special Experiences Reservation Center, which is located to the left of the Showstreet Palace Theater at the park entrance. As of this posting, the Coaster Explorers tour begins at 11 a.m. According to the park’s website, you need to check in 2 hours before the tour starts. I overlooked that detail and arrived 5 minutes before 11 (I’m a crazy coaster enthusiast who was cramming in as many rides as I could). However, I recommend arriving earlier, as finding my group was somewhat difficult with the line of guests outside the center waiting to purchase TimeSaver passes.

Three hours are allocated for each tour, but ours took a little under three. Of course, the tour duration will fluctuate based on the crowds. But I would budget the full three hours to be on the safe side.

Of course, highlights and front-of-the-line access offerings are subject to change. Refunds are available if you cancel by 5 p.m. the day before (again, check the website before you go as this may change).

Our amazing tour guide, Becca, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and did a great job guiding us through the crowds and sharing interesting tidbits about the park and its attractions. Even after 25 years of visiting Dollywood, I learned a few new fun facts about the park during the tour. But for dedicated coaster enthusiasts and Dollywood fans, there won’t be too much information gleaned during the tour.

Becca and I had both been visiting the park since the early 2000s, so I thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing with her about our earliest memories of the park, its growth over the last 25 years, and some of Dollywood’s former attractions. There are nine tour guides in total, and the others whom I saw during my three days at the park seemed just as enthusiastic and energetic during their respective tours.

The tour lets you enter the coasters via the exit, and we were able to ride the elevators on many of them, which was a first for me.

How much does the Dollywood Coaster Explorers Tour cost?

As of this posting, the Coaster Explorers tour starts at $199 per person (ages 4 and older). Park admission is not included. Gold and Diamond Passholders are eligible for a discount.

With my Gold Passholder discount, I paid about $213 with taxes and fees.

The tour must be booked in advance to guarantee a spot. Only one tour is given a day, and spots are limited to 20. Our tour only had eight participants.

Tour participants also receive a commemorative keepsake — a drawstring bag and sticker in addition to the lanyard. I was expecting something a bit more substantial given the tour’s price tag, but it was still nice to have something to take home as a reminder of the tour.

I love the logo and would have loved a branded shirt or hoodie.

Although the under-construction NightFlight Expedition is of course not included on the tour, I did enjoy seeing the construction site from Big Bear Mountain.

Is the Dollywood Coaster Explorers tour worth it?

Again, Dollywood’s Coaster Explorers tour is not a behind-the-scenes tour. You won’t venture into any restricted areas or backstage areas.

The Coaster Explorers tour exists in the space between a TimeSaver Plus pass ($80-120/person) and a guided VIP tour ($349/person).

Is Dollywood’s Coaster Explorers tour worth the hefty price tag? It depends. These are the people who I would recommend paying for the Coaster Explorers tour:

  • This is your first time at Dollywood, you only have one day (or less) at the park, and you want to ride all the major coasters.
  • The park is expected to be very crowded (peak times include spring break, Harvest Festival and the week between Christmas and New Year’s). During those times, even a TimeSaver pass won’t allow you to circumvent the lines entirely.
  • You are in a group of 10-20 people and would benefit from a structured tour.

The tour does not grant front-of-the-line access at Dragonflier, Blazing Fury or Tennessee Tornado. The latter two rarely have long lines (especially early in the day). If your tour begins at 11 a.m., and you get to the park early, you can likely ride Dragonflier, Blazing Fury and Tennessee Tornado before your start time. Just be sure to be at the TimeSaver Center before 11 a.m. (the earlier the better).

I visited the park while the local schools were out for spring break, so it was very busy. Pictured above was the TimeSaver line for Lightning Rod on the day of my tour. We were able to enter the station through the exit and ride within 5 minutes. That was generally the case across all the coasters, aside from one or two. Our longest wait was no more than 10 minutes.

If you’re a Dollywood regular or have multiple days at the park, you could skip the tour and invest in a TimeSaver instead. Even purchasing a TimeSaver pass would save you money that could be spent on food, souvenirs, etc.

If you’re interested in going behind the scenes at Dollywood, I recommend signing up for the park’s annual “Thrills in the Hills” event during the late summer/early fall season or the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) Smoky Mountain Coasterfest, typically held in the summer and November, respectively. Below are a few of the behind-the-scenes tours I’ve been on during those events:
