Disneyland and California Adventure Reopening April 30

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will tentatively reopen April 30, 2021, the Walt Disney Company announced today.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will both reopen on April 30 following Disney’s Grand California Hotel & Spa on April 29. Downtown Disney reopened last July. The Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel will reopen at a later date, according to the Disneyland website.

California’s COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions have kept California theme parks closed since March of last year. But revised guidelines released earlier this month would allow theme parks in California to reopen as early as April 1 with limited capacity, contingent upon the prevalence of COVID-19 in their respective counties.

Theme parks in the state would be open to California residents only with capacities limited to 15-35%.

To manage attendance levels, theme park reservations will be required (along with theme park admission) for entry into Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Operational hours will likely be reduced in the initial reopening. Magic Morning and Extra Magic Hour offerings will be suspended until further notice. Like at Walt Disney World parks, some rides, attractions and experiences such as parades and nighttime shows, will return at a later date. Character meet-and-greets will be paused in favor of multi-character cavalcades that will allow guests to interact with characters from a distance.

Like most theme parks open during the pandemic, mask requirements and other health measures would be implemented.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Reopening Health and Safety Measures

Like Walt Disney World theme parks, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are implementing strict health and safety measures as they reopen. Those include:

  • Enhanced cleanliness procedures
  • Operational changes for physical distancing
  • Reduced contact

Additionally, face masks will be required for all guests (ages 2 and up), and guests will have their temperatures screened prior to theme park entry.

Thanks in part to the COVID-19 vaccine, California has seen a significant decrease in the number of new virus cases in recent weeks, including in Orange County, where Disneyland and California Adventure are located. The county is seeing an average of four new COVID-19 per day, a significant decline from the 118 new daily cases in January.

Immediately after the announcement, news of the April 30 reopening date was posted to the official Disneyland website.
