Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Opening for the Marine World Experience on July 2

For people not from the San Francisco Bay Area, or who weren’t alive in the ’80s and ’90s, you might not know that Six Flags Discovery Kingdom started its life as an animal only park called Marine World/Africa U.S.A. Now the park is going to be getting back in touch with those roots.

Starting on July 2 for passholder previews and July 4 to the public, Six Flags DIscovery Kingdom is opening in a limited, animal only, capacity as “The Marine World Experience.” While there won’t be any rides open yet, you’ll be able to get back into the park and visit the various animal attractions, including the new pride of lion cubs that arrived at the park last year. The former Tiger Island is now “Cain’s Cub Island.” In addition, the park is going to be offering a bunch of special presentations for the unique event. Expect talks from the parks animal care experts, new ways to meet and learn about animals, and animal demonstrations in the park’s outdoor venues.

“Reopening the park and allowing our animals to see our guests again will have a positive effect,” said Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Director of Animal Care Dianne Cameron. “The reality is our guests provide visual and mental stimulation for our animals, which contributes to their overall welfare. Many animals watch humans as much as humans watch animals.”

As with other Six Flags openings, the Marine World Experience is going to be using an online reservation system to control capacity and stagger crowds (read more about it here). They’ll also be expanding mobile ordering – a great silver lining to all of this – and implementing temperature checks. Also expect the changes we’ve seen at most parks so far. Strict social distancing guidelines, increased sanitation, face coverings required, and all that jazz.

California still hasn’t given a go-ahead for theme parks to reopen, but zoos and aquariums have been able to, which gives Six Flags Discovery Kingdom this unique opportunity. Members and Passholders will be able to make reservations today, and the general public can start making them tomorrow.
