Fantasy Island Ceasing Operations

On the heels of the announcement that Indiana Beach had closed permanently, a second theme park previously owned by Apex Parks Group, upstate New York’s Fantasy Island, has also closed for good.

The theme park’s director of marketing, Doug Mandell, released a statement on Wednesday afternoon, which we found on Buffalo-area CBS Affiliate WIVB:

“Despite significant effort and a great deal of investment in infrastructure, rides and new themed areas, we have not seen an improvement in operating results,” Mandell said. “As such, we made the difficult decision to cease operations. This was not a decision entered into lightly. Team members are being assisted by their supervisors and the company is working to minimize impact to those affected. Guests may visit www.fantasyislandny.com for answers to commonly asked questions.”

This news comes after Amusement Today published an article noting that Apex Parks Group contacted multiple other amusement facilities with offers to sell rides from Fantasy Island and Indiana Beach in February of 2020.

The park originally opened in 1961, and originally went bankrupt in 1982. Undergoing multiple ownership changes and name changes including Two Flags Over Niagara Fun Park and Martin’s Fantasy Island, the park grew to 85 acres and featured 32 rides and attractions. At its closing the park had four roller coasters, including the Custom Coasters International-built Silver Comet.

This is a developing story. We will update it as more information becomes available.
