Dreamworld Australia to Retire Tower of Terror II

There are currently seven roller coasters in the world that reach speeds of 100 miles per hour or more. After November 3rd, that number will drop to six. In a post to their Facebook page on October 23rd, Dreamworld Australia announced Tower of Terror II will close forever “in order to continue focusing our investment on the future and delivering new, world-class attractions for you to enjoy.”

When it first opened on January 23, 1997 as Tower of Terror, it became the first roller coaster in the world to reach a speed of 100 miles per hour. It was one of only two Intamin reverse free-fall coasters ever built (the other being Superman: The Escape at Six Flags Magic Mountain). The ride cost $16 million dollars and stood 377 feet tall.

Tower of Terror was re-launched in September of 2010 as Tower of Terror II. Enhancements included turning the cars around so the initial launch was backwards, and extending the launch tunnel.

The good news for local coaster enthusiasts is earlier this year, Dreamworld Australia announced the addition of a Mack Rides multi-launch roller coaster and other additions.

The Giant Drop free-fall drop ride was added to the existing tower in 1998 and will continue to operate as normal. The Tower of Terror II track will be removed from the iconic Dreamworld Tower structure over time.

The retirement of Tower of Terror II will be on the 3rd of November 2019. It will be sad to see such a unique and iconic roller coaster close. 2019 has seen some big roller coasters closed forever (Volcano at Kings Dominion and Vortex at Kings Island to name a few).

Did you ever get to ride Tower of Terror I or II? Will you be sad to see it go? Do you think another park will ever build another Intamin reverse free-fall coaster? Let us know in the comments below.
