Carowinds Winter 2016 Construction Update

With the addition of the new County Fair area at Carowinds in 2017, it makes sense that there would be a lot of construction going on in the park during the winter off-season. But, there’s more going on at the park this winter than just the addition of four new flat rides.

We took a visit to Carowinds this week, braved the elements, and got a look at several projects that are going on throughout the park during the off-season.

Retracking of Hurler

This off-season, the two banked turns on Hurler’s “back stretch” are receiving some retracking work, receiving new wood to improve the overall ride experience.

Hurler’s first banked turn received some retracking work from Great Coasters International during the 2013-2014 Off-Season.

Carolina Harbor Improvements

Carolina Harbor is receiving some added landscaping as well as shade structures for 2017.

This new pergola will eventually be covered in vines to create shade.

New Shade areas adjacent to Schooner’s Bar near the surf club harbor. Eventually, they’ll look like the same structure on the opposite site.

New trees have been planted near Blackbeard’s Revenge.

More landscaping in progress.

The Southern Sidewinder slide has been removed to make way for…

Carowinds’ New County Fair Area

Lots of progress has been made in the new County Fair area. Land has been cleared, pavement is being ripped up, and the outer structure for the Rock N Roller (Huss Music Express) ride building has been erected.

Lots of earth being moved.

This clearing (formerly the location of Southern Sidewinder) will be home to Electro Spin (Mondial Top Scan) and Zephyr (Wave Swinger).

Concrete has been poured, and the outer structure for Rock N Roller has gone vertical.

Not much has been done yet to the exterior of Wings Restaurant, which will receive various enhancements as part of the County Fair transformation.

The Transformation of “Carolina Cobra” into “The Flying Cobras”

Most of the paint work has been completed on Carowinds’ Vekoma Boomerang, which will now be known as “The Flying Cobras.” It looks amazing!

The Carolina Cobra’s sign is still up, and will be replaced soon.

The Blue/White paint job looks great up close. The colors really pop!

All shiny and new!

The only thing left of Carolina Cobra’s pink and turquoise paint scheme are paint chips that were power washed away.

Some other photos I took, that had no other place in this update
