Jimmy Fallon ride to replace Twister at Universal Orlando

Last night the “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon announced on his show that Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon will open at Universal Studios Orlando in 2017, replacing the tired Twister attraction.

Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon will be another screened based, 3-D ride.

“It’s like that except instead of Harry Potter, it’s me,” Fallon joked to his studio audience.  “And instead of Hogwarts, it’s New York City.”

He said to expect features such as smoke, scents and water effects along appearance by announcer Steve Higgins, house band Roots and Studio 6B, where “Tonight” is recorded.

“There’s a gift shop where you can buy a T-shirt for $200.”

A few more details were released on the Universal Orlando blog:

“So, what’s the attraction going to be like? I can’t tell you everything, but I can tell you our team found inspiration in the outrageous celebrity races that have become one of the most popular segments of Jimmy’s Tonight Show. The source material already features a wild and crazy ride almost every week! And since Universal Studios Florida has long been famous for placing guests in the middle of their favorite movies and TV shows, we thought it was a perfect fit.

Soon, you will get the full Tonight Show experience as you make your way to the fabled Studio 6B for a very special taping in which Jimmy challenges his studio audience to the ultimate race through the greatest city on earth.

You’ll rocket through the streets—and skies—of New York City, from the deepest subway tunnels to the tallest skyscrapers, encountering colorful characters, famous landmarks and anything else that comes to Jimmy’s mind—and “that is some weird, wild stuff,” to quote an iconic previous host.”

Twister, the special effects based attraction that opened in 1998, will be closed next Sunday to make way for Fallon. None of us here were huge fans of Twister, but we will be sad for the demise of Bill Paxton and 1990’s-era Helen Hunt appearances in the pre-show.

Universal Orlando sure is a busy place these days. Coming soon: King Kong ride, Incredible Hulk redo, Fast and Furious ride, Jimmy Fallon ride, new hotel resort, and, oh yeah, a brand new water park. All before Star Wars Land opens at Disney.

Are you looking forward to riding Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon?
