Universal Teases First Halloween Horror Nights Maze

Halloween is only, uhh, well, three and a half months away, but the popular Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood starts in about two months on Friday, September 18, and the park has announced the first maze that will be featured at the event this year.  Actually, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro announced it at Comic-Con when he said his upcoming film “Crimson Peak” will be the basis for one of the mazes.

The first announced Halloween Horror Nights maze!

According to the press release from the park:

“‘Guillermo del Toro Presents Crimson Peak: Maze of Madness’ will be unearthed as a three-dimensional living representation of the film, designed to send guests spiraling through the chilling world and in the footsteps of Crimson Peak’s lead character, Edith Cushing, first as they venture from her home in America, then to the decaying and haunted Allerdale Hall mansion in a remote English countryside.  With a foreboding “Beware of Crimson Peak” message that echos from Edith’s past, guests will navigate a labyrinth of paranormal tortured souls who have born witness to the estate’s dark history of unspeakable acts…and who continue to reside in vengeful, ghostly forms.”

Guillermo del Toro's new film comes out October 16, and the maze opens September 18. Which would you go to first?

The film doesn’t actually come to theaters until October 16, so the maze may actually give guests a sneak peak at the film, but it sounds like the Universal team is excited about the set.  John Murdy, Creative Director of Universal Studios Hollywood (see our interview with John on the history of the park here!) and executive producer of “Halloween Horror Nights” described the opportunity and a little of what to expect. “Guillermo del Toro is a leading visionary in film, and Crimson Peak provides endless opportunities to immerse guests into the terrifying world that he created…we will recreate an authentic experience that will have guests feeling as trapped in our ‘Crimson Peak’ maze as the film’s lead character,” said John.

Of course, since the film comes out later than the maze opens, park visitors may not actually know that about the lead character.

Universal has said they’ll be announcing more of the mazes over the coming weeks, so stay tuned to Coaster101 for more about this year’s Halloween Horror nights!
