Shocking news out of California. A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday afternoon near the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride at Universal Studios in Hollywood. A portion of the park was shut down as a result. Authorities said the incident took place in an area designated for smokers and was mostly out of view but children and families were nearby. It remains unclear how a gun made it onto park grounds as security personnel check bags and purses. Universal Studios has closed several attractions near the Despicable Me ride, where the incident took place, according to Variety.
Below is a statement from a Universal Studios spokesperson:
L.A. County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed there was a possible suicide on our property. We are working closely with law enforcement and corporate security on this ongoing investigation. The safety and security of our guests and employees are always of the utmost importance. The park remains open.
