Luna Park’s Thunderbolt Opens Today
The wait is over. Today, Coney Island’s Luna Park will debut Thunderbolt, a unique steel Zamperla looping coaster.
Update: The park today released an onride POV of Thunderbolt. Watch it below:
According to the Luna Park website, Thunderbolt is the “first custom built roller coaster in Coney Island since The Cyclone in 1927” and “will sit near the historic B&B Carousell and the new Steeplechase Plaza, and mark another important milestone in Coney Island’s rebirth.”
The $10-million coaster stretches 2,000 feet and features three inversions: a vertical loop, immelmann and corkscrew.
Thunderbolt’s vertical lift reaches 125 feet into the Coney Island sky.
Riders will reach a top speed of 65 mph as they maneuver the out-and-back course full of airtime camel hops.

Earlier in the month, Mr. Zamperla himself took a spin on the coaster along with Luna Park staff members.
