This week’s A-Z Coaster takes us to Wildfire at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Opened in 2001, Wildfire is one of only five B&M sit-down looping roller coaster models in the world.
At a cost of $14 million, Wildfire represented the largest investment in a single attraction in the theme park’s history.
The 3,073-foot-long coaster pulls riders up 120 feet into the sky before plunging 155 feet (thanks to the coaster’s hillside setting), reaching a top speed of 66 mph. Riders maneuver an immelmann, vertical loop and cobra roll. A corkscrew represents the fifth and final inversion.
Wildfire’s fictitious background story is quite interesting:
Inventor extraordinaire Dr. Horatio Harris was obsessed with creating a flying machine that could sail across the Ozark Mountain treetops. In his quest, he developed a specially-powered fuel to propel his contraption. Named for this explosive concoction, WildFire® is a modern-day speed machine!
While not the largest or longest roller coaster, Wildfire certainly put Silver Dollar City on the map for thrill seekers.
