A-Z Coaster of the Week: Apocalypse

Welcome to the second round of A-Z Coaster of the Week. Every Monday for the next 26 weeks, we’ll share a few clues on Facebook and Twitter about the upcoming coaster whose name starts with “A,” then “B,” then “C.” You get the point.

This round’s “A” coaster is Six Flags America’s Apocalypse, a standup coaster with an interesting past.

Apocalypse originally opened as Iron Wolf at Six Flags Great America in 1990. The coaster was the first built by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard. For a few years, it was the tallest (100 feet) and fastest (55 mph) standup coaster in the world. Iron Wolf’s last day of operation was September 5, 2011. The coaster was quickly disassembled and shipped to Six Flags America.

There, the coaster was repainted orange, grey and black before being rebuilt. It reopened in 2012 as Apocalypse along with some impressive thematic elements (for a Six Flags attraction).

The 2,900-foot-long coaster includes two inversions—a vertical loop and a flat spin.
