According to IGN and several other sources, Atari will soon auction off several of its game franchises in an attempt to “curb bankruptcy losses.”
The minimum bid for the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise is set at $3.5 million. Other games on the auction block include the Test Drive and Total Annihilation franchises. Atari consulted with 180 potential buyers about buying all the franchises on the auction block, but after none of the bids were found satisfactory, the company decided to auction off the games individually.
Atari Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in January.
Do you think this will have any effect on the future of the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
…………. Chris Sawyer shouldn’t have let it go……. =/
Honestly this both scares the crap out of me and ticks me off.
It ticks me off because instead of producing RCT4 they produced RCT3D, which didn’t get that great of reception, which is something that RCT4 would have likely gotten, and what fan would go out and buy a 3DS for that, its not like Pokémon which is a VERY popular handheld game (I even play them myself since they’re simple fun, and the newer games are VERY addicting), but WHY would you go to the handheld market with a VERY popular PC game franchise? the Xbox version of RCT didn’t do that well (while I still play the Box version, the limited saves nearly make the game unplayable for those who like to keep their completed parks, I personally have SEVRAL memory cards just to be able to play), so why branch out onto something with even less space, IMHO, they should have played it safe, not branched out, because what very well may be the last RCT game is rather unknown,
It also scares me because of what’ll happen to the series under a new developer? how many games have succeeded after going to a new developer? sure the Sly Cooper series is still alive (the game (Sly4) by the new developers received well), but the future of RCT might not be so successful, and with Theme Park Studio, I hate to say this being a HUGE fan of the series, but RCT may have reached the end of the ride (pun intended), sure RCT3 and the other games will still be played, but TPS may have just marked the end of RCT, which is VERY tragic,
I might as well say this now,
Roller Coaster Tycoon
1999-2013 R.I.P.
Gone, but not forgotten
Hopefully the next developer creates the RCT4 that fans have been waiting for and deserve. Until then at least we have Theme Park Studio to look forward to.
