A-Z Coaster of the Week: Phantom’s Revenge

This week we travel to West Mifflin, PA to visit Phantom’s Revenge at Kennywood! It originally opened as Steel Phantom in 1991 and included four inversions. In 2000, DH Morgan Manufacturing was brought in to refurbish the ride and take out the inversions. Phantom’s Revenge rises 160 feet over the “Lost Kennywood” section of the park. After climbing the lift hill, the track makes a turn to the right on its way down, sending riders at 60 mph, then down a straight stretch before climbing the second hill.

Unlike many coasters, this one’s second drop is longer than its first. Once you peak the second hill, you are faced with a 228 foot drop through its neighbor the Thunderbolt. At the bottom of this drop you will be traveling at 85 mph!

The ride then concludes with a huge fan turn and transitions into several bunny hops, including a double down.

Having ridden this ride, I can tell you that it is smooth until the ending bunny hops, they can be quite rough. Other than that, this is an amazing 3,200 foot long ride. The slow lift hill allows for great park viewing on the way up. The best part of the ride is the second drop through the Thunderbolt; it sends you diving down into a ravine at great speed with head choppers! Phantom’s Revenge has also been in the Golden Ticket Awards Top Coaster Poll for 13 straight years.
