Kennywood’s Carl Hughes Passes

Former Kennywood park president Carl Hughes sadly passed away December 29, 2012 at the age of 91. He is remembered by many as a leader who drastically improved the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania amusement park throughout the 20th century.

His obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette detailed his down-to-earth ways including parking alongside lower-level employees in overflow parking lots, and using creative marketing techniques to improve the park’s once-stagnant image.

Hughes’ career at Kennywood spanned over 50 years. He became the park’s president in 1963. He oversaw additions such as Laser Loop and Log Jammer. Despite having known heart problems, he took a spin on the park’s Phantom roller coaster when it opened in 1991.

Kennywood would not be the park that it is today without Carl Hughes’ dedication, passion and leadership.

Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes.
