Historic Vidámpark in Hungary to Close

Vidámpark in Budapest, Hungary, which has been in operation since 1896, will soon be closing its doors, a news story reports.

The park is home to Hullámvasút, a wooden roller coaster that has been in operation since 1922/1926 (there are conflicting reports). The coaster was recognized by ACE as a “coaster classic.” The last coaster the park installed was a Maurer Söhne spinning coaster in 2009.

Fortunately, the rides that are deemed to be historically significant will continue to operate within the area of a nearby zoo. This hopefully means that Hullámvasút will not be lost.

The park has been plagued with financial burdens in previous years. Local officials hope to have a more open and modern amusement park for the city in the future. The park is expected to shut its doors for good on November 6, 2012.

The park’s website was still live as of this posting. It has some great pictures and videos of the park’s attractions.

It’s always sad to hear of an amusement park closing, especially one that has such an extensive history (over a century!). If you have had the chance to visit Vidámpark, let us know how your experience was in the comments section below.
