SCarowinds Adding New Scarezone & Maze for 2016

Last year was my first visit to SCarowinds, which is Carowinds’ annual “Halloween Haunt” event. After last year’s experience, I was curious how the event would change for this year’s event, now in its 17th season of operation.

When the SCarowinds website went live last month, I noticed that two of the mazes from 2016 were missing from the listing; Last Laff 3D and CornStalkers. The omissions weren’t necessarily unexpected; Last Laff utilized a portion of what is now the Plants vs. Zombies 3Z Arena Gift Shop, and CornStalkers was located on Carowinds’ former miniature golf course, which went away with the Carolina Harbor water park expansion.

However, SCarowinds’ website did mention that the park would be replacing these two experiences with a new maze and a new Scarezone. For fans of the former mazes, you will not be disappointed, as Carowinds has re-imagined and enhanced the ideas behind these mazes and created two all-new experiences for SCarowinds 2017.

In SCarowinds’ newest Scarezone, E.H. Bailey’s Psycho Circus of Mystery & Mayhem, it appears the clowns of Last Laff 3D have taken their traveling circus on the road, and have set up shop in the area near Afterburn and Plants vs. Zombies.

From the SCarowinds website: “Ladies and Gents, gather around. There’s a new type of fear that’s here to be found. Watch carefully and be alert, because you never know when we might go berserk. See black magic and evil clowns. You’ll dread when our circus comes to your town. Bring a friend and hold their hand, because we’re the scariest things in all the land.”

I wouldn’t say that I’m afraid of clowns, but they’re definitely not my favorite form of entertainment, so the fact that there is more space inside Carowinds for clowns to scare me is a bit on the unsettling side. However, judging by the park’s posts on social media, the new area is going to have some great circus details, and will only add on to the level of immersion that was seen inside of Last Laff 3D last year. The addition of a clown-related Skeleton Key to the area will also be great. Just don’t honk a bike horn in my face.

And for fans of Cornstalkers, SCarowinds has given the theme a face lift, as well as a new location and backstory.

Now called Dark Harvest, this maze focuses on the keepers of the corn, scarecrows.

According to SCarowinds lore, “Recent construction in the area has put a strain on our area’s cornfields. Varmints, pests and wandering guests have started making their way into the maize – spreading their filth amongst the husk. With each wilted, black ear that falls from its stalk, the scarecrows become possessed with rage…an ear for an ear – an eye for an eye.”

After being unable to experience Cornstalkers due to weather last year, I’m really looking forward to walking through Dark Harvest this year. The possibilities are endless, especially with a new expanded location backstory. Dark Harvest will also be located near Plants vs. Zombies 3Z Arena.

SCarowinds opens this season on Friday, September 16. It will be open on the remaining Fridays & Saturdays in September, and Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays in October, through Sunday, October 30. Hours vary, but for the most part are 7:00pm-12:00am.
