An Inside Look at FunPix at Carowinds

It’s not often that I buy on-ride photos, and it’s not just because it’s impossible to look cool while riding a roller coaster. Normally, the cost of $15-20 for one photo is the deterrent, and that’s just for one ride. I’d go broke if I wanted a copy of every on-ride photo during one day at the park.

However, FunPix, which debuted at Carowinds as well as three other Cedar Fair parks this season (along with two more parks being added next season), may change my views on buying photos at the parks.

FunPix1

For just $19.99 for a single day Unlimited Photo Pass, slightly more than the cost of one printed photo, FunPix allows you to save not just every on-ride photo taken on certain rides, but also every photo taken by in-park photographers.

The 2017 All-Season Price of $44.99 is only available to Gold or Platinum Passholders, and is valid at the seven Cedar Fair parks that feature FunPix for Platinum Passholders. An incredible deal, if you’re able make it to a lot of parks in a season.

The best part is that it’s an incredibly easy process. You can buy FunPix access in advance, either online or using the free Carowinds app, or at several locations when you arrive at the park.

If you buy online prior to your visit, you have to visit a FunPix location to set up your account (it links to your season pass or they give you a FunPix card linked to your email address). You then receive an email with access to MyFunPix.com to set up password so that your account can be used with Carowinds’ Mobile App.

But, you may wonder, where does FunPix work?

At Carowinds, there are seven roller coasters where FunPix cameras can capture a snapshot of your ride. (We’ve included the locations so you can prepare to strike a pose!)

  • Fury 325 – At the bottom of the second drop, as you turn towards the front of the park.
  • Nighthawk – In the middle of the NightHawk pathway (Near the photo booth).
  • Intimidator – In the helix after the mid-course brake run
  • Afterburn – Low point right before the underground tunnel part of the track.
  • Ricochet – Near the end of the ride during the camelback humps.
  • Woodstock Express – Near the end of the train cycle.
  • Lucy’s Crabbie Cabbie – On the first drop

Following your ride, you scan your Funpix card at a kiosk near the on-ride photo sales, and your on-ride photo is saved to your FunPix account within the Carowinds app or at MyFunPix.com. From there, you automatically have a digital copy, and can save your photos to your phone’s photo album to post immediately to social media.

If you want a printed copy of your photo, FunPix also allows you to purchase physical copies for $5.00, a savings of almost $7 per photo.

There are also several areas of the park where you can scan a QR code with the Carowinds app and unlock a special border for your photos taken in the app. These photos are also stored in your FunPix account.

  • Fury 325 (Pictured Above)
  • Dinosaurs Alive
  • Carowinds’ Park Entrance
  • Planet Snoopy (near the Snoopy Statue)
  • Carolina Harbor’s Entrance
  • Myrtle Turtle Beach
  • Inside Carolina Harbor, On the State Line.

Additionally, roaming photographers can capture your photo at the park entrance or with the Peanuts characters throughout the day. Like the ride photos and special borders, these photos are saved to your FunPix account.

For someone like me, who normally avoids the log jam at the end of the ride as people crowd around the monitors to look at photos, I’m looking forward to using FunPix on my next visit to Carowinds.

FunPix will be available at the following Cedar Fair parks in 2017: California’s Great America, Canada’s Wonderland, Carowinds, Cedar Point, Kings Dominion, Kings Island and Knott’s Berry Farm. Prices and the number of FunPix locations vary by park, so be sure to consult your local park’s website for specific information.
