During my recent trip to Silver Dollar City, I had the great pleasure of being there for their wonderful Christmas event. “An Old Time Christmas” has been going on for over 20 years and has been recognized by CNN, USA Today, The Travel Channel, Good Morning America, AOL Travel, Yahoo Travel and MSN.com for its spectacular shows and amazing lighting.
As you walk through the park during the day, you are surrounded by hundreds of decorations and but the real treat comes after dark, when 1,000 decorated trees and over 5 million lights illuminate the park.
The lights begin to be put up in August to be ready in time for the event. It surely is a sight to see and pictures don’t do it justice.
There are also several great Christmas shows to choose from, including A Dickens’ Christmas Carol, Sounds of Christmas, Frosty and It’s A Wonderful Life. I took in a showing of It’s A Wonderful Life and was amazed at the quality of the production. The actors put on an excellent performance throughout the 60 minute show. This was something you would definitely not see in your typical regional park.
Silver Dollar City even puts on a parade twice a night. It wasn’t quite as long as a Disney parade, but it was very well done. Each float was specifically designed for Silver Dollar City and featured 200,000 LED’s and characters from the classic television claymation movies.
On your way out of the park, you have to catch a viewing of the Christmas On Main Street show, which includes the park’s five-story tall Christmas tree. It is covered in lights that sync with music every 15 minutes; a great way to end your day at Silver Dollar City!
