Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster Now Open

The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is the latest thrill attraction to open in the Smoky Mountain region. Located in Gatlinburg, this seven to eight minute coaster takes rides on up into the majestic Smoky Mountains for a thrilling journey just over a mile in length. The attraction cost several million dollars to build and opened in Mid-September 2014. Located at 306 Parkway (Traffic Light #2) in Gatlinburg, TN, one trip down the mountain will set you back $14.32 for a single rider.

The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster was manufactured by Wiegand, the leader in alpine coaster design and whom we had the pleasure of interviewing in order to learn more about how alpine coasters work and what makes them different from a typical roller coaster. Rider’s control their top speed via a hand brake system.

The Smoky Mountain region may soon be known as the alpine coaster capital of America. The excellent Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster has been thrilling thousands of riders but it’s about to get some serious competition. Just down the street, Goats on the Roof is building The Goat Coaster while in nearby Gatlinburg another is rumored to be under construction. If so, that would make four alpine coasters within miles of each other, not to mention the alpine slides at Ober Gatlinburg! With the region being host to over 13 million visitors a year, I’d say all the alpine coasters have a chance to be successful businesses. Learn about more fun things to do in the Smokies.
