Carowinds to Add Two New Waterslides for 2014

Charlotte, NC’s Carowinds is adding “two new breathtaking water slides” to their already impressive waterpark area, “Boomerang Bay.”

Surfer’s Swell and Dorsal Fin Drop, set to open in May 2014, will offer two distinctively different ride experiences that are unique to “Boomerang Bay,” which opened at Carowinds as “Riptide Reef” in 1989.

Surfer’s Swell will propel riders through 263 feet of slide as they plummet down 45 feet into an angled wall, built to mimic the feeling a surfer gets when they ride a wave. The ride then goes through a tube into a splash pool.

Dorsal Fin Drop is a  longer attraction, featuring 351 feet of slide. This bowl slide will send riders down a curved tunnel,  shooting out into the bowl. According to a press release from the Carowinds website, “Like a shark circling its prey, guests spin and swirl before sliding into the corkscrew exit. ”

According to Screamscape, the slide will be located in the grassy area near the first drop of  Thunder Road, the park’s “racing” Wooden Coaster.

These slides are part of the first phase of a $50 Million Expansion that will happen at Carowinds over the next three years. This expansion will also include a new food complex, parking lot and ticket booth improvements, as well as a 300′ tall Roller Coaster.

The expansion will also create 270 seasonal and 15 full-time jobs at the park.

Carowinds is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., which owns and operates 11 theme parks and 5 hotels in 9 States, as well as Toronto, Canada.
