In Memphis, Tennessee, the sixth-annual Delta Fair & Music Festival is underway amid temperatures reaching the upper nineties. Despite the heat, I spent a fun evening at the fair enjoying the one week each year in which one can ride a roller coaster in Memphis.
The fair is relatively young, having made its debut in 2007. Each year, the fair has grown in size and has increased its offerings.
While I was at the fair for the rides, the fair also offers a selection of attractions and activities for the non-thrill seekers, such as “pig wrastlin’,” a demolition derby, fantastic fair foods and much more.
Our first ride was 1001 Nights that offered a great view of the midway.
As the sun set, the temperatures cooled slightly. The fair’s skyline became illuminated with a spectrum of bright flashing lights, a necessity for any roadside fair or carnival.
Bonzai provided great hang time.
It’s no roller coaster, but it’s a fun flat ride that you can find at amusement parks everywhere.
The swings offer another great view of the midway.
The midway featured some interesting flat rides that I had not seen before, such as the above.
The Rock ‘n Roll Himalaya-style ride is always fun, especially with blaring rock music.
The Fireball had the longest line at the fair. It’s as much of a spectacle to watch as it is to ride.
The fair also features some milder rides for the younger thrill seekers.
The Crazy Mouse is the larger of the two roller coasters at the fair (the other being a typical Wacky Worm model).
It may not be the tallest or fastest portable coaster, but if you enjoy relentless spinning, this coaster should fulfill your needs.
The Delta Fair & Music Festival runs through September 8, 2013 in Memphis, Tennessee. Visit the fair’s website for more information.
