RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D…Released?

It’s been eight years since the last RollerCoaster Tycoon game, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, initially hit retailers. Now, thanks to Atari and N-space, gamers can once again enjoy the thrill of creating their own roller-coasters and amusement parks with the release of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D for the Nintendo 3DS…maybe. After months of delays, the release date was finally set for October 16th. Interestingly, Amazon.com currently lists the game as “Out of Stock.”rct3d review

New features promised for RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D ($29.99)  include:

  • An entirely new gameplay mode called “Coaster Story”, which blends together tutorials and park challenges into a cohesive and entertaining narrative and offers players tons of special unlockable content.
  • The first-person view for coaster rides fully immerses players with the innovative 3D display exclusive to Nintendo 3DS.
  • The ability to freely customize the design of roller coasters and theme parks with the use of a stylus and the touch-screen interface.
  • Just like a real theme park, take a snapshot of yourself on a ride and share it with your friends.
  • Gyro sensor allows players to look around their theme park by simply tilting their Nintendo 3DS.
  • Create the ultimate coaster and easily share it with friends through StreetPass.
  • Invite your Mii Plaza friends to your theme park.

However, early reviews are calling the game disappointing and a step backwards for the series (I’m not sure how anyone has received a copy of the game though). Despite the delays, a number of features have apparently been REMOVED from the game including:

  • You can’t name your rides or adjust their color schemes
  • Height markers on ride tracks are missing.
  • Terrain can’t be modified (which means no tunnels!)
  • Missing ride types
  • No weather
  • No fireworks
  • No signs

I have not played the game personally so I cannot confirm but if all those features are missing (some of which are kind of necessary to build coasters) I don’t think I would spend my money on it. For those wishing for an RCT4 it appears that this is not it. Here’s hoping Atari wakes up and makes the game we have all been waiting for!
