In honor of Math and Science Week, Cedar Point has teamed up with K’NEX for the first ever Great Thrill Ride Build-Off! Cedar Point Facebook fans can win a pair of tickets by building their own amusement park ride out of K’NEX pieces. The winner will also receive a Light Up Ferris Wheel building set courtesy of K’NEX, a $50 value.
My brother and I were bored one winter weekend so we decided to enter the contest. We decided to construct a recreation of Demon Drop, the first generation Intamin freefall ride which used to reside at the front of the park and has since been relocated to Dorney Park using the original K’nex roller coaster set. The ride is fully functional and contains numerous details such as the turnstiles for the queue. I’ve embedded a video below as well as several pictures. Let me know what you think!
Here are a few K’NEX Demon Drop Stats:
- 7 feet tall
- 21 inches wide
- 7.5 feet long
- 28 gears used
- 17 tires & wheels used
- Over 4,000 pieces used
I must say that is amazing! Great K’nex building skills you guys have!
Extraordinary well done job with the Demon Drop model. I had to watch the video twice to see all of the mechanisms in action. With your details and mechanics, I thought I was the watching the real thing. The mechanisms you guys built are incredible, with their realistic operation and appearance.
I really like how you guys even added the anti-rollback/ brake mechanism at the end of the track. And the tipping mechanism in the station was brilliant.
I bet this one is more comfortble than the P.O.S. at Dorney Park.
