Geauga Lake’s Big Dipper to be demolished

Unfortunately, it looks as if Geauga Lake’s historic Big Dipper rollercoaster’s days are numbered. While Big Dipper might seem like a minuscule ride to some, it is always sad to see a historic ride go.

“Although no date has been set for the demolition, the owner of Geauga Lake’s Big Dipper roller coaster says it definitely will be torn down.

Through his agent — Tom Woosnam of APEX Western Machinery Movers in Akron — the owner announced his decision this morning.

“I have determined that the deadline for the sale of the Big Dipper cannot be met,” the owner said in an e-mail. “I have decided to demolish the Dipper and end the existence of this wonderful roller coaster. This is painful but necessary decision.”

The Big Dipper had recently been offered for sale on eBay. The owner had purchased it during Cedar Fair’s on-site auction of rides and artifacts at the park on June 18, 2008.

The Geauga Lake amusement park shut down after the 2007 season. Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom water park continues to operate in the summer, and Cedar Fair has been trying to sell about 500 acres it owns in Bainbridge Township and Aurora.”
